Thriller goes to the wire by Eugene Kyne

Cavan 3-07 Kerry/Donegal 1-10

A thriller between these two rivals went down to the wire before a goal by Kelly McArdle secured the win for Cavan in an outstanding contest. The lead changed hands five times while the sides were level on seven occasions in a tremendous struggle to the wire. In the end Cavan prevailed because Fiona McLaughlin had kept them in the game with three brilliant saves and an outstanding five player move gave them their winning goal.

The game opened with Cavan having the first major chance. It came after 4 minutes when Kelly McArdle forced Benny Touhy to make a very brave stop at the expense of a fifty that came to naught. KD then moved down the field for an Allie Kelly point. They followed it with a Denise Dunnion free before Cavan replied with two points from Colleen Jordon a free and Emma Clarke but they were also rescued by a brilliant save by Fiona McLaughlin on Denise Dunnion. Cavan moved into the lead when Caitlin Hynes soloed in for a goal but Kerry/Donegal answered with four of the next five scores.

Denise had two of the points while Sarah Grealish and a brilliant long range effort from Anita McKenna had the others. They also forced Fiona McLaughlin to make another excellent save and went into the break on level terms 0-06 to 1-03.

Kerry/Donegal continued their scoring ways with 1-01 to open the second half. A long run by Sarah Grealish set up Clare Hannon for the point while Denise Dunnion then crashed a goal opportunity into the side netting. When Dunnion was fouled as she bore down on goal two things resulted. Ashley Callery was sin-binned for ten minutes and Allie Kelly crashed the penalty to the net. Cavan reacted to the player down with a very positive eight minutes. Colleen Jordon had a point and then after a long solo run Aimee Gomez fired to the roof of the net from twenty yards out. More points by Jordon and then Kelly McArdle after a Brady score at the other end had the side's level at 1-09 to 2-06 with five minutes remaining. The teams again swapped points as the clock ticked down, before Cavan had the crowning moment. The ball moved down the left wing and passed through five hands including McKeon, Jordon, Clarke and King before Kelly McArdle was the final player who buried the ball in the net.

Fiona McLaughlin was outstanding for Cavan, brilliant saves and expert awareness around her goal. Ashley Callery, Shauna Kiernan, and Aimee Gomez excelled at the back. Linda McKeon had an excellent second half, while Emma Clarke was more of a point guard on this occasion she did it very well. Colleen Jordon and Kelly McArdle got the all important scores. Benny Touhy made a couple of very important stops for KD, Kathleen Hickey, Jennifer Moran and Aoife Gibson did well at the back. Sarah Grealish has very good speed and she put the Cavan defense back on its heels when she ran at them. Denise Dunnion, Allie Kelly and Anita McKenna who played in front of the back line were others who had major roles for Kerry/Donegal.

Cavan are three peat Champions

The Ladies of New York held the annual Mattie Farrelly Seven a side Competition last Saturday where they were joined by teams from Boston and Washington in a very eventful day of football. Mattie was a very important part of the Cavan club before he passed away and the tournament is named in his honor. With nine teams in total, there were two divisions with Cavan, Kerry/Donegal, Washington and Boston Shamrocks in group one and Na Fianna, Rockland, Fermangh A, Tir Na Nog, and Fer5managh B in group 2. At the end of group play, Cavan and Na Fianna were the group winners with Fermanagh A and Kerry/Donegal joining them in the semi finals. Rockland Tir Na Nog, Boston Shamrocks and Washington advanced to the Shield semi finals. Tir Na Nog went on to beat Rockland by a score of 4-06 to 3-02 in the Shield Final with Dean O'Connor officiating a very enjoyable contest. Emma Conlon from Tir Na Nog was the MVP after an outstanding display for the winners.

In the Championship semi finals, Cavan had too many weapons for Fermanagh as they ran out 7-05 to 2-01 winners to set up a final match up with Na Fianna who defeated Kerry/Donegal 4-07 to 1-05 in the second semi final. First half goals from Colleen Jordon, Ashley Callery, and Emma Clarke set Cavan on the way but it was not all one way traffic as Na Fianna had three points from Molly O'Rourke, two, and Cliona Dwyer. The ten minute half was being played at hectic pace in the sweltering heat with both sides using there subs intelligently. Cavan had a further brace of goals to open the second half before Colleen Jordon slotted home a penalty after a foot block in the small square. Molly O'Rourke had a goal in reply for Na Fianna while a point from Cliona Dwyer was cancelled out by scores from Emma Clarke and MVP Linda McKeon who was active across the field with strong ruins out of the back and tenacious tackling when in pursuit of the ball.

An outstanding day of football with the regular season proper now ready to go full steam ahead. Cavan are the Champions then for the third year in a row. The final lineout's are as follows.

Cavan Rosie O'Reilly, Emma Clarke Ashley Callery, Aimee Gomez, Bridget Mulligan, Caroline McBrien, Nicola Rogan, Colleen Jordon, Linda McKeon, Fiona McLoughlin, Vicky Power, Katie Kilkenny

Na Fianna 3-18 Rockland 2-02.
Na Fianna was ahead by 3 points when they had their first goal. A shot by Molly O'Rourke evaded the Rockland keeper and hit first the right post then the left before Kayla Coughlin reached it with a foot and kicked to the 21. It was not cleared by the defense however and Alison Traynor punished it by finding the net. Rockland had their first point in the aftermath from Gemma Mahoney, a good score from thirty yards out but Na Fianna immediately had a brace of points Rockland had their second score of the half on 15 minutes when Kelly Weir slotted home a goal but again Na Fianna replied. They had seven further points before the break with Molly O'Rourke and Joanne McKenna very active in open play. The sides swapped goals to open the second half with Mary Ann Gormley doing very well to get the Rockland major but again Na Fianna flexed the muscles as they scored five of the next six points with Alison Traynor in a new position for her of full forward getting two. Aisling Toonan finished the onslaught with a goal in the final moments to put further distance between the sides.

Cavan 5-16 Kerry/.Donegal 3-04
Cavan qualified for the final of the Anne Kearney cup with a convincing win over Kerry/Donegal where their utilized the tremendous talents of Emma Clarke and Coleen Looney in front of goal. They accounted for 4-09 with both capable of picking off their own score or setting free a teammate. The score after ten minutes was 1-02 to 1-01 for Cavan with Clarke and Denise Dunnion swapping scores but then an explosion of 1-03 with Clarke grapping her second started to put the game out of reach for Kerry/Donegal. Kelly McArdle (2) for Cavan and Dunnion and Catriona Brady had scores that cancelled each other out but it still left Cavan leading 2-07 to 1-03 at the break. A brace of goals from Caitlin Hynes and Coleen Jordon when Linda McKeon set her up extended the lead before an Allie Kelly took the gloss off it as she had a goal for KD when she was introduced off the bench. A stream of points for Cavan surrounded a Colleen Jordon score while Denise Dunnion had a last three pointer for the losers.

AK Semi Final Previews

11.30 am Ladies Football Semi Final. Kerry/Donegal V Cavan.
The first semi final pits the holders Kerry/Donegal in a tilt with long time nemesis Cavan. KD had a brilliant season last year save for the result in the County final. Aoife Gibson continues to prove that she may be the best wing back in NY, while Denise Dunnion and Anita McKenna are thorns in any team's side. New signing Catriona Brady is a very good addition to the combination colors. Cavan had what was for them a down year last season and they will have huge aspirations this time round. The side has a mix of youth and experience with veterans in central roles and younger players filing in. Ashley Callery and Bridget Mulligan have big futures in LGAA, and are excellent footballers The Kilkenny sisters also may be starting. New comer to the Breffni team is Coleen Jordon and with the help of Kelly McArdle and Emma Clarke they are a bonafide one, two three punch up front. Clarke of course has one of the best side steps in Gaelic Park, men or ladies. Rosie O'Reilly has been used at wing back of late and it has taken, while Linda McKeon is still the straw that stirs the drink as a link in the middle of the park. It will be a trilling opening to the Parks events on Sunday and will go down to the wire. KD to prevail in a high scoring contest by four.

1.00pm Ladies Football Semi Final. Na Fianna V Rockland.
The Sean Faherty Champions Na Fianna is under new management this season with Kieran Traynor at the helm. One of his first orders of business was to get Alison Traynor signed up and it was a major coup as she can slot in anywhere in the back or middle of the field. Mary O'Rourke and Molly O'Rourke are the scoring leaders with Wee Molly a livewire. Joanne McKenna is also back to her best and be a match winner in her own right. Brianna Tierney, Stephanie Tierney and Shannon Spillane are some of the players who have come through the excellent minor ranks and look for all to have parts to play in this contest. Rockland has three excellent signings to back bone their onslaught in Niamh Mc Laughlin, Michelle Kelly, and Molly Bartley. While the result of a recent game against Cavan went against the side they certainly battled throughout and as the team matures their will be success in their future. Jenny Kirby, Courtney Traynor, and Sarah Rowley are three players who give 110% in all encounters and while they will be the underdogs in this one, look for them to take the game to Na Fianna. Na Fianna to get the win in an exciting contest by six.
