Rockland Ladies Gaa The idea of forming a Rockland Ladies Football team took place back in 1993 when Cork woman Dianne Hayes (nee O'Flynn) proposed the idea and with her brother Brendan as coach and Tommy McCormack as the asst.coach , Rockland ladies took the field that year and performed surprisingly well. Surprisingly, because this was, with the exception of Dianne O' Flynn and Claire Charlton, an all American born team. There were Irish American, German American, Italian American – a cross section of America that made them unique in NY GAA circles. They survived that first year and they formed a tight knit group that went on to win the Louis O' Hehir cup in '96(and in 2000 and 2007) and laid the foundation for teams that came after them. Based so far north of the city has always meant that they struggled to attract the immigrant players from Ireland and consequently they battled to compete with the ‘bigger' teams in NY, but with dedication and love of the sport they survived, and have in recent years attracted a number of players who have with their experience, played an enormous part in keeping the heritage of Ladies GAA alive in the New York area.. With a growing underage girls program in the Rockland GAA club and with the recent development of their GAA grounds, the Ladies team is assured of being around for years to come and certainly should be quite capable of taking the honors in Gaelic Park in the not too distant future. Great credit is due to those members who stuck around when the going was rough and helped make it what it is today. Go raibh mile maith agaibh. 2010 Rockland Ladies
