NY Ladies All-Stars announced
On Saturday night, November 24th 2007, the NY Ladies GAA Dinner Dance was held at the Royal Regency Hotel in Yonkers with NY Ladies Chairperson Nollaig Cleary the well deserved honoree. With over 500 people on hand including both teams from the earlier contest at Gaelic Park the guests were treated to a marvelous evening. The successful U-14 team that traveled to Ireland this year were presented. The squad went all the way to the final of its division with impressive displays on the way. They were lauded as the future stars of the NY County Team, and with Gaelic 4 Girls doing outstanding work at the underage level games such as the encounter with the traveling Underdogs will surely become the norm instead of the rarity they have been in the past. Already word is abound that the Irish Army team’s in both men’s and women’s Gaelic Football will be arriving in NY in March. The other highlight of Saturday night’s festivities was the announcement of the 2007 Ladies All Stars. With commemorative jerseys and trophies given out to each player the selection that went from the nominated 45 to the final 15 left all on the edge of their seats. When it was announced it gave NY a look at the undoubted talent that is now playing in the Big Apple under the auspices of the Ladies GAA. Twelve of the fifteen were involved with the county squad that played the Underdogs.
Players who have represented their counties in Ireland Mary Maguire, Linda McKeon, and Joanne McKenna won positions while NY born players who have come through the ranks Aimee Gomez, Alison Traynor, Kelly McArdle show that the grass roots structure certainly works. Traynor was also awarded the Young Player of the Year award after a brilliant year anchoring the all conquering Cavan team.
